At Allington Hughes’ family department, we are pleased with the recent announcement of the pilot scheme known as Raneem’s Law, designed to provide immediate support for survivors of domestic abuse. This initiative will see specialist domestic abuse services embedded in select 999 emergency call centres across the country, ensuring that help reaches victims at the earliest opportunity.
Raneem’s Law was established in response to the tragic murder of Raneem Oudeh, who had made over 12 calls to 999 in the months leading up to her death. Despite her repeated pleas, no effective action was taken, and she and her mother were later fatally stabbed by her ex-husband.
Domestic abuse takes many forms, and it is often incredibly difficult for survivors to recognise the signs while still in the relationship. Many we work with only identify the abusive behaviours once they’ve left. This is why we often refer to the perspective of ‘looking from the outside in.’ All too often, survivors do not seek help until after the relationship has ended, which makes early recognition of even the smallest signs of abuse crucial.
We fully support this scheme, which aims to offer specialist assistance to victims as soon as possible. Our team works closely with outstanding organisations such as the Domestic Abuse Safety Unit (DASU) in North Wales, Women’s Aid North Wales, and the Citizens Advice Bureau Cheshire, who all play vital roles in helping victims. We believe Raneem’s Law will complement and extend the efforts of these services.
